NEC RACEWAY SIZING

NEC Conduit Fill Calculator

Code-oriented raceway fill using NEC Chapter 9 conductor and raceway areas. Supports mixed conductor sizes and insulation types in EMT, IMC, RMC/GRC and PVC Schedule 40/80.

INPUTS

Raceway

Standard raceways use Chapter 9 Table 4 nominal internal areas. Choose Custom for a manufacturer inside diameter or a rectangular cable duct with clear width and height. The cross-section updates as you edit cable diameters and quantities.

CONDUCTORS / CABLES

Fill items

THHN/THWN-2 and XHHW-2 presets use Chapter 9 Table 5 occupied areas. Bare copper uses Table 8. Choose Custom cable for manufacturer OD-based calculations.

Result

READY
ACTUAL RACEWAY FILL— %
Smallest listed raceway that passes: —
Engineering note: Equipment grounding and bonding conductors count toward raceway fill. Passing the area check does not prove pullability or ampacity compliance; check bends, pulling tension, sidewall pressure, adjustment factors, grounding/bonding and the NEC edition adopted by the AHJ.

NEC method

Chapter 9 Table 1 establishes the normal maximum occupied area:

1 conductor/cable → 53%
2 conductors/cables → 31%
3 or more → 40%
Qualifying nipple ≤24 in → 60%
Data basis: Table 4 raceway areas; Table 5 insulated-conductor areas; Table 8 bare conductor areas. Custom cables are calculated from manufacturer OD using A = πd²/4.

Why this calculator uses table area instead of only wire diameter

For standard insulated conductors, NEC Chapter 9 Table 5 already provides the occupied cross-sectional area including insulation. Using those values avoids treating bare copper area as raceway fill and makes mixed-size calculations reproduce standard NEC fill tables.

1 conductor

Maximum occupied raceway area: 53% under the normal Table 1 rule.

2 conductors

Maximum occupied raceway area: 31% under the normal Table 1 rule.

3 or more

Maximum occupied raceway area: 40% under the normal Table 1 rule.

Three-conductor jamming screening

For exactly three equal-size conductors/cables, the calculator warns when the raceway-ID to effective-OD ratio falls between 2.8 and 3.2. This is a screening warning only; actual pullability depends on bends, cable stiffness, pulling method and raceway geometry.

Reference basis

The calculation is structured around NEC Chapter 9 Tables 1, 4, 5 and 8. Raceway and conductor values are nominal code-table data; custom cable mode remains available for manufacturer-specific constructions. Verify marginal designs against the NEC edition adopted for the project and the AHJ.
